The Annual Epsom Trainers Open Day is being held this year on Sunday 20th July with proceeds going to the Epsom Training and Development Fund Charity.
Since its inception, the Charity has, through the generous support of all concerned – Committee and supporters alike - achieved very worthwhile and admirable results for the Epsom Racing Industry; providing affordable housing for stable staff in the form of a house owned by the Charity as well as many other accomplishments, including the provision of reflective tabards to increase the visibility of exercise riders – something that, I’m sure you will all agree, is very relevant especially at this time of year.
The Open Day is a popular event, creating a marvellous day out for the local community and attracting many visitors from all walks of life, including people already involved in racing, people with non-racing equine interests and members of the general public.
The exact programme for the day has yet to be confirmed but it is envisaged it will follow a similar pattern to previous years: The trainers show horses at exercise on the gallops from around 9am, and then from 10am to 1pm local yards will be open to the public. There will also be a veterinary lecture and a shoeing demonstration.
In the afternoon the focus of attention switches to the racecourse where we hope to have, amongst other attractions, a children’s funfair, terrier racing, a parade of retired racehorses, falconry display, a stable lads v jockeys tournament and the ever popular Shetland Pony Derby over the last few furlongs of the Derby course. There will also be a number of tradestands selling something for everyone!
