The Epsom Open Day 2011
The 2011 Epsom Racehorse Trainers’ Open Day in aid of Epsom Racing Staff Welfare, (ERSW) dawned bright if not warm and was attended by nearly 1000 people. Epsom Coaches provided an excellent complimentary shuttle bus service for both the gallops and the yards and were kept busy over the entire event.
The 9am gallops display was very well attended, and a real credit to all the trainers and staff who supplied horses for this. It took place on the Downs behind the racecourse and provided a unique opportunity to see racehorses at work.
From 10am – 1pm there were 8 yards open to the public with added attractions at some of these:
John Akehurst
Michael Attwater
Jim Boyle
Simon Dow
Roger Ingram
Brett Johnson
Pat Phelan
Roger Teal
Although the Open Day finished at 1pm, the Omni Terrier Derby continued the excitement of the day and took place until 3pm, with proceeds going to ERSW.
The following day saw Epsom Downs Racecourse Family Funday take place and host nearly 11,000 people who enjoyed a funpacked day of entertainment and horseracing including:
A Shetland pony Derby sponsored by Sunderlands Bookmakers
Hot shoeing demonstration
Parade of Ex Racehorses
Painted Horse anatomy display
Children’s Funfair
Pony Rides
Petting Zoo
Bouncy Castles
Pony space hopper racing
Meet and greet crocodiles and reptiles
As well as all these events there were also a large variety of tradestands housed in and around the Duchess’ Stand providing something of interest to everyone, a traditional Victorian horse carousel and Epsom Fire Brigade in attendance.
Epsom Racing Staff Welfare will benefit greatly both from the proceeds of this year’s Open Day and a £1 donation by Epsom Downs Racecourse for every paying adult who attended the Funday. This will enable more investment to be made into the welfare of racing stable staff in Epsom.
